Myofunctional Therapist

Did you know your health starts in your mouth?

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a non-invasive treatment that aims to correct abnormal usage of the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face. Proper usage of these muscles are important to carry out essential daily functions such as breathing, sleeping, speaking, swallowing, and for optimal growth and development of the jaws, teeth, and facial bones. During therapy, clients will typically perform therapeutic exercises to retrain these muscles and improve their function, ultimately promoting better overall health.

How Therapy Helps

Sleep

Improve your breathing, resulting in better quality sleep.  Therapy helps correct mouth breathing habits and can prevent or improve snoring and sleep apnea.

Tongue

Your tongue should be sealed to the roof of your mouth at rest. If your tongue rests low, thrusts against your teeth, or you have a tongue tie, therapy trains your tongue to work for you, not against you.

Swallowing

Correct abnormal swallowing patterns that may be tied to common symptoms.  Your tongue should not push against your teeth when swallowing.

Muscle Pain

Chronic muscle pain or tension in the neck, shoulders, and TMJ (jaw joint) may be signs of a bigger underlying problem. Therapy helps to address the root of these problems.

Do you or your child suffer from any of these common symptoms?

When these muscles do not engage/work properly, it can lead to:

  • Sleep Issues (poor/ interrupted sleep, snoring, and sleep apnea)
  • Dental Problems (crooked teeth, open bites, cavities, bleeding gums, gum recession)
  • Allergies, Asthma, Nasal Congestion, Sinus Issues
  • Mouth Breathing

Why I became a
Myofunctional Therapist

I started my career as a Registered Dental Hygienist in 2010 and have practiced for over 14 years. As a graduate of Cypress College of Dental Hygiene, here in sunny Southern California, I graduated first in my class and received the Orange County Dental Society Student of the Year. What I have enjoyed most about my work is connecting with my patients. I love educating patients on how to care for their mouths and as a result empowering them to take their health into their own hands.

It has been a challenging journey as I found myself many times compromising patient care to adhere to the confines of insurance based dentistry. As a hygienist, disease prevention is at the core of my training, but sadly many of us aren’t able to utilize this important skill. In 2019, I began working for the most inspiring dentist I have ever met. His holistic approach to dentistry and health overall aligned with how I have always wanted to practice as a clinician. With this philosophy in mind, I was truly able to look at the body as a whole and focus on my core values as a health care provider - prevention and treating the root cause of a problem rather than alleviating its symptoms.

"Myofunctional therapy became a part of my life as I was trying to get to the root cause of what was going on with my son."

My children are the HEART behind my practice. Myofunctional therapy became a part of my life as I was trying to get to the root cause of what was going on with my son. He had symptoms of teeth grinding and snoring at the age of two, frequent night time waking/nightmares, bed wetting that lasted until the age of 8, and extreme temper tantrums. At the time, we attributed these symptoms to normal childhood behavior, but as a mother, I knew in my gut there was a something more to the many issues we all experienced as a family surrounding my son. I spent years searching for answers and validation from doctors and dentists. It was only when I looked outside of mainstream medicine that I found what I was looking for. I discovered how having a tongue tie could lead to mouth breathing, and as a result affects sleep, emotional control, and unsurprisingly a long list of symptoms including all the ones my son suffered from. Getting restful sleep is vital for repairing the body and for children it is crucial for development. My son was not breathing well and not sleeping well. The root cause of his issues stemmed from how he was using and resting his tongue. He had a tongue tie.
In order to address these issues he needed myofunctional therapy and to have his tongue tie released. Myofunctional therapy was required before and after surgery to get his tongue to functioning normally. Due to my educational background, I was able to get trained in the field to help him and this is where my journey began. Today, I see children and adults with similar issues. My hope is to educate and help individuals and families in an area that is far overlooked and to help improve their quality of life.

What My Patients Say

Heidi Rauld

Both my daughter and I have gone through therapy and a tongue tie release with Joanne and have had a wonderful experience.  I was experiencing morning headaches and neck and shoulder tension, both of which have significantly improved from the time I started therapy.  I’ve even seen a positive change in my posture.  Joanne is not only very knowledgeable and thorough, but she is so kind and encouraging along the way.  I’m so thankful to have found Joanne and I would highly recommend her to anyone needing myofunctional therapy.

Jon Golden

Joanne is super well informed, had clear answers for all questions, was very good about being responsive to communications, worked with us when we wanted to pivot on some occasions and was overall great with my daughter as she is also a caring mom of 2 younger children. If you are considering myofunctional therapy, I would definitely recommend speaking to Joanne as she is passionate about what she does, has significant knowledge, experience and a track record of success. It was always a pleasure meeting with her and she even does zoom or remote meetings to fit the busy parents schedule.

Mary Recker

I am writing regarding our experience with Joanne Nguyen, RDH, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist who provided therapy services for my son, who at the time was 11 years old.   I highly recommend her services and expertise. Being my son’s dental hygienist, she was crucial in discovering anatomical and other issues affecting the overall oral health of my son.  Which also affected sleep, affecting his daily living (attention in school due to fatigue, etc.)  2021 was also the year of limited physical contact due to Covid restrictions.  We managed to have 12 sessions (in person, Zoom) and was provided home exercises which were extremely helpful to address my son’s mouth breathing, narrow palate. She was also available to answer any questions, provide information during treatment. Her patience and ability to have him participate was also outstanding.
