Real change, one family at a time.

I am writing regarding our experience with Joanne Nguyen, who provided therapy for my son, who was 11 at the time. I highly recommend her services and expertise. Being my son's dental hygienist, she was crucial in discovering anatomical and other issues affecting his overall oral health — which also affected his sleep and daily living, including attention in school due to fatigue. We had 12 sessions (in person and Zoom) and were given home exercises that were extremely helpful for his mouth breathing and narrow palate. Her patience and ability to have him participate was outstanding. She continued to offer her expertise alongside other disciplines (ENT, orthodontist) so he received the best possible care. Today, my son has so much improvement with sleep, diminished mouth breathing, and successful orthodontic work — all initiated by Joanne. We are so grateful. Her knowledge base is more than exceptional.

Joanne at Heart Myofunctional Therapy has transformed our lives! We were seeking help for my son, who was constantly tongue thrusting. She did an extensive evaluation, and we learned he was tongue-tied. Joanne suggested therapy and a tongue-tie release. We are five months in and close to completion. My son is more confident, less anxious, and sleeping through the night. He is learning how to properly seal his mouth and swallow, and how to rest and use his tongue correctly. Joanne is knowledgeable, understanding, and patient. I learned so much from her about how the mouth functions. I would recommend her to any family in need of myofunctional services.

I want to start by saying what a wonderful therapist Joanne is! I met her at my dentist, who also specializes in sleep disorders. After years of issues with my teeth, I was waking in the middle of the night choking and with a very dry mouth. When I shared my concerns, Joanne told me I had a tongue tie. Although I'd been diagnosed as a baby, my pediatrician said it wouldn't be a problem and it was never fixed. The choking at night was because my tongue wasn't in the proper position when sleeping — it was falling back and blocking my airway. I also had debilitating neck and upper-back pain and anxiety that wouldn't go away, both connected to the improper tongue position. Work with Joanne was very straightforward; she gave me a clear understanding of the process and how long it would take, and I looked forward to our meetings because I could see progress in real time. We met about nine months, six before surgery and three after. The two biggest differences: the neck pain went away completely, and no more choking at night — a night-and-day difference that began within weeks of starting therapy. I'm now almost two years post-surgery and still benefiting. I sleep soundly, have no back or neck pain, my anxiety is non-existent, and I have no issues swallowing or chewing. I honestly don't know where I'd be if I hadn't found Joanne. I highly recommend her!

Both my daughter and I have gone through therapy and a tongue-tie release with Joanne and have had a wonderful experience. I was experiencing morning headaches and neck and shoulder tension, both of which have significantly improved since I started therapy. I've even seen a positive change in my posture. Joanne is not only very knowledgeable and thorough, but so kind and encouraging along the way. I'm so thankful to have found her and would highly recommend her to anyone needing myofunctional therapy.

Joanne was wonderful with our son, who was 19 at the time. He has mild autism and had previously done feeding therapy, where we discovered his limitations with his tongue — movement, poor control, and sensory issues. We'd noticed a lot of buildup on his bottom teeth from sleeping with his mouth open and being a mouth breather. Many exercises required a mirror, and she was so patient with him, finding ways to help with his dislike of mirrors. We've been so happy to see his progress. He no longer sleeps with his mouth open, so there's less buildup on his teeth, which makes dentist visits easier. He is now consistently breathing through his nose, which is better for his overall health, including jaw structure. We highly recommend Joanne!

My 7-year-old daughter and I worked with Joanne for almost eight months to guide her toward a healthier, more natural facial posture. My daughter was a consistent mouth breather and snored regularly, which concerned me given the potential health ramifications. Joanne gave us a detailed analysis, a report, and a plan of action, with simple morning and evening exercises to train her tongue to rest on the roof of her mouth. My daughter was challenging and often didn't want to participate, but looking back I'm very glad we went through this — she's made good progress and it was well worth it for her future benefit. Joanne is super well-informed, had clear answers for every question, was responsive, and great with my daughter. It was always a pleasure, and she even does Zoom to fit a busy parent's schedule.

My 7-year-old son and I both saw Joanne this past year to help correct our tongue ties. My son wasn't sleeping through the night and I was dealing with neck tension. Joanne was patient, very informative, made the process as simple as possible, and stayed with us the whole way. My son started sleeping through the night just a week after his release — and it continues now, six months later — and my neck tension released immediately. I've already recommended Joanne to friends and will continue to do so!

I was referred to Joanne by a holistic dentist for help with my recently diagnosed tongue tie. Working through her myofunctional therapy program was educational and eye-opening in so many ways. She helped me understand the effects of my condition and provided a thorough program of exercises over many months, and also referred me to other practitioners who added to my progress. She and I share similar views on many aspects of overall health, and her knowledge and experience opened up a whole new avenue of learning and awareness for me. At our last session she provided a great recap with photos showing how much I'd progressed. I highly recommend Joanne to anyone seeking a myofunctional therapist!

Joanne has been amazing to work with! I reached out when I wasn't getting the answers I wanted for my son and daughter's mouth breathing. She has taught me and my kids so much about tongue positioning, keeping their mouths closed, and breathing through their noses. She has guided us with expansion and braces and referred us to dentists and orthodontists who understand airway function. Joanne has been so patient, and my kids look forward to all of our meetings with her.

Working with Joanne has been a life-changing experience. I've learned so much in just a few weeks that I'm surprised I didn't already know at my age — it's something everyone should learn and practice. She has taught me basic skills I didn't even know were supposed to be natural. I've strengthened the muscles in my mouth and tongue and learned how to eat correctly, which I didn't realize I was doing incorrectly. Thanks to Joanne, I'm correcting the function of my tongue and face, and it has so many positive effects.

Joanne Nguyen is a great myofunctional therapist! She is very professional and explains every step of the process with great detail and care. Joanne helped my son improve his facial muscular strength, posture, and teeth grinding at night. I would definitely recommend her to others.
